A United Arab Emirates residence visa generally entitles the holder to freely enter and exit the country for the purposes of living, working, and conducting business there. However, anyone who stays outside the UAE for more than 180 consecutive days risks having most of their residence permits automatically revoked. In this article from AK Venture Path, you’ll learn how to maintain your resident status in the UAE and what options are available to you if you’ve already missed a deadline.
Why is a residence visa revoked?
A UAE residence visa—valid for one year or longer—generally allows the holder to enter and exit the country as many times as desired without any additional formalities. However, if the visa holder remains outside the UAE for more than six months (180 consecutive days) without a single visit to the UAE, the visa automatically expires—with the exception of the “Golden Visa.”
There are many reasons for such a long absence: medical treatment abroad, internships, temporary employment abroad, or family circumstances. In 2026, geopolitical factors will also play an increasingly significant role—such as military tensions in the Gulf region, which disrupt air and maritime traffic and make business travel more difficult.
How can one maintain resident status in the UAE?
There are two main strategies for ensuring the visa remains valid, depending on whether the 180-day limit has already been exceeded:
- A brief visit to reset the deadline: As long as the 180 days have not yet expired, a stay of at least one day is sufficient to reset the absence counter.
- Beantragung eines Re-Entry Permits: Ist die Frist bereits überschritten, führt eine Einreise ohne Genehmigung automatisch zur Annullierung des Visums – hier hilft nur ein vorab beantragtes Wiedereinreisedokument .
Exception for Golden Visa Holders
The 180-day rule does not apply to holders of the UAE Golden Visa. These visas, which are valid for up to ten years, allow for unlimited stays abroad without jeopardizing resident status. For many of our clients at PSK Tax Consulting who commute between Germany and Dubai, the Golden Visa is therefore the most reliable solution—an aspect that we regularly incorporate into their overall tax and residency strategy.
Wann kann ein Re-Entry Permit beantragt werden?
The application is submitted online from abroad. The requirement is that 180 days must have elapsed since the last departure, but the underlying visa must still be valid for at least 30 days. To determine this, simply check the most recent exit stamp in your passport: If your planned return is after the 180-day period has expired, you may submit the application.
Procedure for Applying for a Re-entry Permit
Die Zuständigkeit richtet sich nach dem Emirat:
- Dubai: General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA)
- Other Emirates: Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security (ICP)
Nach Genehmigung muss die Einreise innerhalb von 30 Tagen erfolgen, damit das ursprüngliche Visum bis zu seinem regulären Ablaufdatum gültig bleibt . A service fee applies for processing.
Proof of the Reasons for Absence
When submitting an application, you must state the reasons for your absence and provide supporting documentation—such as medical certificates, training certificates, or business documents. In the case of exceptionally long absences, the authorities often require additional documentation; for employment visas, a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the employer may also be required.
Temporary Goodwill Policies
In March and April 2026, the immigration authorities in Dubai showed some flexibility toward residents who had slightly exceeded the 180-day deadline due to force majeure—without officially announcing this. However, the only reliable option remains applying for a re-entry permit in a timely manner, as such goodwill provisions may expire at any time.
