In short: A bank account in Dubai can be opened both privately and for a business. For a corporate account you need a valid residence visa and an Emirates ID. Without a residence permit you are treated as a non-resident account holder — in that case your account data is automatically reported to your country of residence under the Common Reporting Standard. For getting started, an account with an online bank is usually recommended, before adding an account with a local bank if needed.
Do Dubai and the UAE share data with foreign authorities?
One of the most common questions around opening an account in Dubai is: do banks in Dubai and the UAE share data with foreign authorities? The answer is: it depends.
The United Arab Emirates has participated in the OECD’s Common Reporting Standard (CRS) since 2017.1 Since then, banks in the UAE have been required to transmit financial information about account holders to the countries in which those holders are tax resident. This includes account movements, interest income, dividends, and other relevant financial data.
The exception that proves the rule
Both personal and business accounts held by holders with a valid residence permit in the form of a residence visa and an Emirates ID are exempt from the automatic exchange.
Individuals without a residence visa and Emirates ID are treated as holders of so-called non-resident accounts. When such accounts are opened, banks ask for the tax residence and tax number — as a result, all account information is automatically forwarded to the authorities in the home country.
Opening a business account in Dubai
While a residence permit is not strictly required for a personal account, you need a valid residence visa and an Emirates ID for a corporate account in Dubai. These can be applied for as part of a company formation in Dubai. A valid residence permit additionally prevents the automatic transmission of account data to foreign authorities.
Unlike in Europe, opening business accounts in Dubai can take somewhat longer due to stricter compliance requirements. The process differs between online banks and local banks in terms of time required and documents needed. Important: think about the later account opening already at the company formation stage — certain business activities noted in the company documents can significantly complicate or even rule out opening a business account.
| Online banks | Local banks |
|---|---|
| Company documents | All documents as for online banks |
| Passports of all directors and shareholders | Business plan |
| Residence permit of at least one stakeholder | Proof of residence in the UAE |
| — | CVs of all parties involved |
We recommend that our clients open a business account with an online bank as a first step, in order to keep the effort low and be able to carry out business transactions as quickly as possible. An account with a local bank can be added later if needed.
Foreign currency accounts & credit cards
Both online banks and local banks in Dubai offer, in addition to accounts in the local currency, the dirham (AED), accounts in common foreign currencies such as the euro, US dollar, Swiss franc, and British pound.
Most bank accounts include a Visa debit card in dirhams. Some banks additionally offer debit and credit cards in foreign currencies to avoid exchange fees abroad — these, however, must be applied for separately.
The concept of credit cards has been adjusted due to past cases of misuse: anyone wanting a credit card, for example to collect airline miles, generally has to place a security deposit equal to the monthly card limit. Nevertheless, the credit cards offered by some banks are excellent for collecting airline and hotel points.
Frequently asked questions about opening an account in Dubai
Do I need a residence visa for a personal account in Dubai? No, a personal account can generally also be opened without a residence permit, as a non-resident. However, in that case your tax residence and tax number will be requested, and the account data will be automatically reported to your home country.
Will my account data from Dubai be reported to the German tax office? With a valid residence visa and Emirates ID, you are exempt from the automatic CRS data exchange. Without a residence permit, you are treated as a non-resident, and your account data is automatically reported.
Should I open an account with an online bank or a local bank first? Generally, an account with an online bank is recommended first, since the effort is lower and transactions are possible more quickly. An additional account with a local bank can be opened later if needed.
What documents do I need for a business account with a local bank? In addition to the company documents and passports, local banks usually also require a business plan, proof of residence in the UAE, and CVs of all parties involved.
